Published May 21st, 2008 in UncategorizedThe Camelback Bridge is a recently restored historic wooden bridge that arches over the Constitution Trail in Normal, Illinois. It is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
History
The bridge was built with its distinctive camelback shape to allow steam locomotives to pass underneath the bridge. When the railroad stopped using the tracks, the original form was no longer needed, and during the restoration the bridge was rebuilt to a lower height to allow easier access to vehicles.
The bridge is part of Virginia avenue, which runs from Linden St. to Main St.
